TravelTube Podcast: Facts vs. Fiction in Travel

Host: Mark Murphy | Guest: Scott Walters, Walters Wanderings Travel (12-year travel agent)

Myth #1: Travel Agents Cost More Money — FALSE

Scott says in 12 years, he's only failed to match a price 4 times. He negotiates directly with cruise lines and tour operators, and since their commission is built into the price anyway, you get a human advocate for free.

Myth #2: Book Airfare on Tuesdays — FALSE

That rule is outdated. Key tips instead:

  • Clear your cache and cookies before every search — airlines' algorithms detect repeat searches and quietly raise prices on you
  • Use incognito mode to appear as a new shopper
  • Use Google Flights to track price trends, set alerts, and use the "Discover" feature to find cheap fares by browsing destinations
  • Shifting your dates by even one day can save $300+

Fact #3: Pack Half the Clothes, Twice the Money — TRUE

Mix-and-match packing saves luggage fees and hassle. Cruise lines often offer discounted laundry days (~$39 for a full bag on Norwegian). Suite guests on Princess get free laundry. Budget for souvenirs — you will spend more than you expect.

Myth #4: Solo Travel Is Unsafe — MOSTLY FALSE

Scott sticks to State Dept. Level 1–2 destinations and uses vetted tours. His tips for Cancun specifically: don't linger in customs, travel carry-on only if possible, and never leave your drink unattended.

Myth #5: You Don't Need Travel Insurance — VERY FALSE

At 8–10% of trip cost, Scott considers it essential. Key reasons:

  • Foreign hospitals often require cash upfront
  • Credit card and health insurance often don't cover you abroad
  • He shared two contrasting stories: a traveler with insurance who broke ribs in Venice paid ~$100 out of pocket; one without insurance who got a staph infection lost everything except airfare

Bonus Topics

Spirit Airlines collapse: Scott and Mark agree the real culprits were bad debt management and two bankruptcies — not just fuel costs. Spirit didn't hedge fuel prices, and the failed JetBlue merger sealed their fate. Smaller regional airports will feel the biggest impact.

Villas & vacation rentals: Scott has access to thousands of vetted properties — some exclusive to travel agents — as an alternative to Airbnb, which he calls "the Wild West" with no real vetting process.

Costco travel: He's skeptical — their gift card rebates sound good but come with zero personalized service, and he can't help clients who booked elsewhere when things go wrong.
