Top Perks Discounts & Freebies of Being a Travel Agent
Presenter: Cindy Williams, CEO & Founder of Wanderlust Campus | 30+ years in the industry
Perk #1 — Travel Agent Discounts
- Discounts are real, but you must be a registered travel agent to access them
- Terms vary by supplier — some offer blanket discounts or promo codes, others require qualifications (minimum bookings, completed training, etc.)
Examples:
- Cruise lines — some offer a free cruise anywhere in the world once you complete their training program and hit a booking threshold
- Disney — up to 50% off rooms; reduced-cost bookings on Disney cruise lines with extra cabin space
- Credit/reward cards — some suppliers load cash or credits onto a card once you hit booking volume targets
Cindy's take: Once you've stayed in top suites, villas, and all-inclusive properties at agent rates, it's hard to go back. The goal is to use discounts to access a higher category for the same spend.
Perk #2 — FAM Trips (Familiarization Trips)
- Sponsored trips where suppliers host travel agents to experience a property, cruise ship, or destination firsthand
- Typical structure: Agent covers their own airfare; accommodation, meals, and experiences are hosted
- Sponsors include: hotels, cruise lines, tourism boards, resorts
How to get invited:
- FAM trips are largely sales-dependent — invitations go to agents who can demonstrate booking volume with that supplier
- Building a relationship with a supplier through consistent bookings and education partnerships helps
- If you're not getting invited yet, it's a fixable problem — grow your book of business and the invites follow
What they're like:
- Agents are wined and dined; the supplier's goal is for you to have a memorable firsthand experience
- The knowledge translates directly into better client matching and more confident selling
Perk #3 — Industry Invites
- Local and regional events hosted by suppliers — luncheons, product showcases, destination briefings
- Examples: African safari briefings, hotel brand presentations, cruise ship tours when ships are in port
- Some are open access; others are invite-only based on sales tier
GTM Conference (top-tier invite):
- Requires approximately $1M in sales (individual agent) or $2M+ (agency level)
- Supplier covers transportation and hotel nights
- Fast-paced, work-focused — back-to-back supplier meetings, very little downtime
- High value for learning new product and building supplier relationships quickly ("speed dating for travel agents")
Perk #4 — Upgrades
- Happen through a combination of relationships, credentials, and knowing how to ask
- More likely as your supplier relationships deepen over time
- Often happen at check-in without even requesting
Examples from Cindy:
- Disney Polynesian Resort — booked standard DVC points, upgraded to club level with fireworks view
- Cruise upgrades
- Airline first class upgrades
Cindy has a dedicated video on how to courteously request upgrades.
Perk #5 — Freedom Over Your Life (Cindy's #1)
- Full control over your schedule — no corporate clock, no missed family moments
- Cindy left corporate travel after her daughter was born and has never looked back
What this has meant for her:
- Present for every ballet recital, soccer game, and football game
- Able to support aging parents and eventually welcome her stepdad into their home
- Watched her daughter grow up with an entrepreneurial mindset and launch her own company
Her message: The travel, the discounts, and the upgrades are great — but the ability to show up for your family without asking permission is the perk that can't be quantified.
