How to Make More Money From Your Travel Business

Cindy Williams | Wanderlust Campus

Introduction

The age-old question: How do I make more money from my travel business? Most people assume the answer is "sell more" or "work harder" — but it's actually simpler than that. As a mentor and consultant helping thousands of travel professionals each year, Cindy breaks down the real levers that drive profit.

1. Build a Strong Sales Attraction System

A sales attraction system starts long before the booking call — it starts with your branding and marketing.

  • Your logo and visual brand speak before you do
  • The "rule of seven": people need to see you 7 times before they take action
  • Ask yourself: does your branding connect with the right ideal clients?

The full funnel looks like this:

  • Traffic → from social media, online presence, real-world networking
  • Lead flow → how are you capturing and converting that traffic?
  • Qualification process → are you filtering for clients who will actually buy?
  • Value-building touchpoints → by the time they get on a call, they should already know you're a professional and be ready to book

On the sales call itself: Reframe sales as consultative problem-solving, not pressure tactics. Good sales = great service. You're a detective uncovering what matters most to the client, matching them with the right solution, and guiding them through the process. It should feel effortless by the time you reach the close.

If you're only closing 10–30% of your sales, a better sales attraction system can move that number significantly.

2. Up-Level What You're Selling

This is one of the fastest ways to increase income without adding time.

  • A Carnival cruise at $500 takes the same work as a river cruise at $30,000–$40,000
  • Same calls, same qualification, same booking process — but dramatically different commission

Practical steps:

  • Audit your current catalog of services
  • Add at least one higher-ticket vertical to your business, even if you love your current niche
  • Disney specialists: you may need to book many Disney trips to equal the commission on one luxury vacation — consider opening an additional vertical

You don't have to abandon your passion niche — just make sure your overall business mix is actually paying the bills and supporting your goals.

3. Master Cross-Sells and Upsells

Clients will give you a budget. That's fine — and also just the starting point.

  • Always present upsell and cross-sell options, not just to earn more commission, but because clients may not know what's available
  • Examples: butler service upgrades, concierge packages, beach dinners, breakfast inclusions, resort perks
  • Frame it around value and the fact that this may be a once-in-a-lifetime trip
  • Use monthly savings breakdowns to make the price feel accessible

"It's almost a disservice if I didn't tell them this amazing thing was available."

You're already on the call. You're already doing the booking. Adding upsells doesn't significantly increase your admin time — but it can substantially increase your commission.

4. Evaluate Your Commission Split

This is the most overlooked factor — and the most expensive mistake new agents make.

The common mistake: Starting with the cheapest entry point (MLMs, low-cost host agencies) to save money upfront — then losing tens of thousands in commission over time.

Industry benchmarks:

Experience Level Typical Commission Split (Agent Keeps)
New agent, no certification ~70%
Certified / experienced 85–91%

The difference between 70% and 90% on your first million in sales = tens of thousands of dollars.

Wanderlust Campus approach:

  • Does not host agents (no conflict of interest)
  • Career placement service matches students with reputable host agencies
  • Negotiates higher commission splits for certified graduates
  • No preferred supplier bias — placement is based on your goals and working style

"I always feel the worst for students who come to me after 1, 2, even 10 years saying they're stuck. We have to rebuild everything — it's double the work compared to just doing it right from the beginning."
