Aloha Resort, Lamai Beach - Koh Saumi, Thailand | Hotel Review

Introduction

Hey, good day everyone — it's Mike from Finding Fish. Welcome to Thailand, welcome to Koh Samui, and welcome to the Aloha Resort on Lamai Beach. Yes, I am on a small island in the Gulf of Thailand.

This is part of a 30-day Thailand trip. We flew into Bangkok, stayed there for about a week, then took a flight down to Surat Thani, a transfer, a ferry, and arrived on the island — all for around $66 CAD. Now I'm checking into this 77-room boutique resort right on Lamai Beach for seven days, and I'm going to show you everything.

As always at Finding Fish — I'm not telling you to come here, I'm not telling you to stay home. I'm just showing you what I got. And for about $85 CAD per day, this is what I got.

Getting Here

  • Flew into Bangkok → stayed approximately one week
  • Flight from Bangkok to Surat Thani → transfer → ferry to Koh Samui
  • Total transit cost to the island: ~$66 CAD

Property Overview

The Aloha Resort is a 77-room boutique property located directly on Lamai Beach. It's a family-friendly resort with an open, easy-to-navigate layout — the pool sits centrally with the beach straight out front.

Check-in: 2:00 p.m. | Check-out: 12:00 p.m. Early check-in available if rooms are ready.

Arrival & Reception

The open-air reception area is small, in keeping with the boutique scale of the resort. A nice breeze flows through, which is welcome during high season. At reception you can also arrange:

  • Excursions and island transfers
  • Airport transfers
  • Motor scooter rentals (300 baht, available approximately 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.)

Pool Area

One pool on property, clean and well-maintained — staff were observed cleaning it early in the morning. Sun loungers are available but limited, so arriving early is recommended as demand can outpace supply.

Pool Bar: Open approximately 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Beers approximately 350 baht (~$3.50 CAD). Beach towels available here for exchange.

Breakfast Buffet

Located adjacent to the pool area. Open daily 7:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Small buffet but solid food quality. Seating available indoors and outdoors.

Offerings include:

  • Eggs and made-to-order omelets
  • Bacon, vegetables, and fresh fruit
  • Breads, croissants, jellies, and a toasting station
  • Coffees, juices, water, and cereal

The Beach

Lamai Beach is directly in front of the resort — the main draw for most guests. Long stretches of beach in both directions, with restaurants one way and massage spots and coffee shops the other. Best for beach walking at low tide when the sand is firmer.

Conditions during visit: approximately 30°C, strong ocean breeze, low humidity, no mosquitoes.

The Room — King Deluxe Garden View, Second Floor

Booked approximately three months in advance at $85 CAD/night.

Room features:

  • King-size bed (firm mattress)
  • Strong air conditioning
  • Work desk/station
  • Sitting area
  • Mini fridge
  • Well-sized bathroom

The room is well-built and offers strong value for the price point. The resort also offers a range of other room types including ground-floor bungalows and rooms with pool or ocean views at varying price points.

Food & Dining (Beyond Breakfast)

The resort serves food until 5:00 p.m. Food quality is consistently good and very affordable.

Highlights:

  • Clubhouse sandwich — ~$9 CAD
  • Chicken fingers and fries
  • Salads
  • Great value overall — no need to leave the resort for meals

For those who want to explore: restaurants, pizzerias, massage spots, and coffee shops are scattered throughout town. A local pizzeria was visited during the stay.

Getting Around — Motor Scooter

Rented a scooter for 300 baht for three days. A fun way to explore the island, but a strong caution: Koh Samui traffic is extremely busy and chaotic. If you're an experienced motorcycle rider, multiply the intensity by 5–10 compared to back home. There are rules, but they're loosely followed. Proceed with care.

Resort Highlights

  • Compact and easy to navigate — everything centrally located
  • Beachfront access — one of the best assets of the property
  • Consistent ocean breeze — makes high season heat very manageable
  • No mosquitoes during the stay
  • Great food quality on-site at affordable prices
  • Strong value for money at ~$85 CAD/night

Closing Notes

Koh Samui is a place worth visiting sooner rather than later — the island has grown significantly over the years and will continue to change. The Aloha Resort delivers solid value in a great location for travelers who want a relaxed, beach-focused stay without a lot of fuss.
